WEB DESIGN // OAKVILLE

Web design in Oakville.

Ask four firms in this town to quote the same website and the numbers will land between $8,000 and $40,000. Here is what actually moves that figure, and what a bigger budget genuinely buys you.

Put the same brief in front of four firms in this town and the quotes will come back somewhere between $8,000 and $40,000. Every one of them will look reasonable. None of them will explain the gap.

That gap is the only interesting thing on the page, so this is where we start.

What the four numbers usually are

The low number is almost always a purchased theme with your logo in the corner and your photographs in the slots. It is not a scandal. For some businesses it is genuinely the right spend. What it is not is a custom site, and the quote rarely says which it is.

The middle numbers are a real build with different amounts of thinking attached. One firm has included the writing, the other has sent you a blank document and called it a content questionnaire. One has included the technical setup, the schema, the redirects and the tracking, the other will invoice those later as phase two.

The top number is often a real engineering project, and sometimes it is twelve months of retainer folded into a project price so the monthly figure looks smaller. Both exist in this market. They are not the same purchase, and you are entitled to ask which one you are holding.

What genuinely moves the figure

Five things, in rough order of weight.

How many pages exist, and that means real pages with their own argument, not navigation items. How much of the writing we do, which on most projects is the single largest line, because somebody has to turn what you know into sentences and that work does not get cheaper by being ignored. Whether the design is drawn for your brand or adapted from something that already existed. How many systems have to speak to each other: a booking tool, a CRM, a quoting engine, an inventory feed, each one a real integration rather than a logo on a slide. And whether an existing site has to be carried across with its rankings and its URLs intact, which is an afternoon on a small site and a genuine project on a large one.

Our own numbers, since we ask you to compare: builds start at $5,000, ecommerce at $10,000, and most Oakville small business sites settle between $5,000 and $15,000. Fixed, in writing, before anything starts, invoiced per phase as each phase ships. What a website costs sets out what each band actually contains.

What a bigger budget does not buy

It does not buy rankings. Search position comes from structure, content and authority built over months, and no amount of money spent on a homepage animation substitutes for a page about the thing somebody searched for.

It does not buy speed. Expensive sites are frequently slower than cheap ones, because the budget bought a video header, three font families and a scroll library, all of which the visitor downloads before they can read anything.

It does not buy leads on its own. A site that looks superb and asks for nothing specific converts worse than a plain one with an obvious next step, and we have rebuilt enough of the former to be confident about that.

Oakville is four jobs wearing one town name

This is where a page written from out of province falls apart, so here is the local version.

Bronte behaves like a harbour village with a season attached. A business down there is partly selling an afternoon, which makes hours, parking, the look of the actual room and a booking that works on a phone more valuable than any brand statement.

Kerr Village is independent and walk-in, and the websites there are usually doing a smaller job than their owners think: confirm what the place is, prove it is open, show the real interior, and make ordering or booking take one tap. A fifteen page site for a six table room is a purchase somebody talked you into.

Downtown along Lakeshore Road is retail and professional in the same block, where a buyer is comparing you against a Toronto firm they already looked at. That site is selling credentials and specifics, and it fails on vagueness rather than on design.

North of Dundas Street the housing is newer and so are the problems. A trade working the established streets closer to the lake is selling evidence that it has handled a house of that age, with that wiring, on that lot. The same trade working the newer subdivisions is selling availability and a clean schedule, because nothing up there is failing from age yet. Those are different pages, different photographs, and often a different first sentence.

If you work one end of this town, build the page that is true and leave the rest alone. Four thin district pages are worse than one honest one.

What our builds reach Oakville from

McGeoch Electric lists Oakville in its service area alongside Burlington, Hamilton, Guelph and the Waterloo Region, running residential and commercial electrical through a single site. The structural problem there was two buyers who share no vocabulary, an owner with a dead circuit and a manager with a scheduled fit-out, neither of whom should feel the site was written for somebody else.

Revive Power Washing works across the province from twenty minutes down the QEW, in a trade where the whole argument is visual and seasonal.

Two builds, both ours, both live right now. They sit on our work page. Read them like a buyer and judge the work rather than the pitch.

The clause worth reading before you sign anything

Ownership. The domain registered to your business and not to an agency account. The code handed over at launch. No licence that expires, no platform you cannot leave, no hosting arrangement that holds the site hostage while you negotiate.

This matters more in Oakville than in a smaller market, purely because there is more agency churn here and a site that cannot be moved becomes a reason to stay somewhere you have stopped being happy. Who owns your website is the five minute check worth running before you hire anybody, including us.

How a build runs

An hour of your time at the start, photographs of your own work, one person who can approve a decision. We draft the copy and bring it to you to react to rather than handing you a form. Ten working days to three and a half weeks, brief to launch, and how long a website takes breaks that down phase by phase.

If you are holding quotes right now, send them over with your brief and we will tell you what the spread is actually made of, whether or not you end up working with us. Start there.
