TRADE // PAINTING

Web design for painters.

Painting is the most crowded trade in this region and almost every site in it is the same site. The way out is not a nicer template. It is your own photographs, four separate job pages, and being live before the season starts.

Open five painting company websites in this region and you will struggle to tell them apart. The same roller held at the same angle, the same claim about quality workmanship and attention to detail, the same beige living room that belongs to nobody, the same four-field contact form.

That is an unusually good position to be in. In a trade where everyone looks identical, looking like yourself is the whole strategy, and it is cheaper than it sounds.

The sameness is the opportunity

When four quotes arrive and the four websites behind them are interchangeable, the homeowner decides on price. Painting then becomes a race to the bottom run by whoever most badly underestimated the prep.

A site that reads as a company rather than a person with a ladder changes which conversation you are having. Not fancier, not louder. Calm, specific, grown up, with your actual crew and your actual jobs on it. The decision being made is who gets a key to the house while the owners are at work, and that decision rewards the one who looks organised.

Your own work, or nothing

A painted wall is a flat colour, which is why most painting photography fails. The shots that sell are the ones showing control: the cut line where the trim meets the wall, the edge at the ceiling, a sash done properly, a before and after of the same corner taken from the same spot.

Shoot in daylight with the lights on and the blinds half closed. Shoot the detail, not the room. Get one wide and three tight per job and you will have more usable material in a month than the stock library ever gave you.

There is a secondary benefit nobody mentions. Your own photographs show the housing stock you actually work on, so a homeowner with a century brick semi can see a century brick semi, and a homeowner in a new subdivision can see theirs. Stock cannot do that at any price.

Four jobs, four buyers, four pages

Interior, exterior, cabinet refinishing and commercial are not four services. They are four customers with different fears.

The interior buyer is worried about mess, furniture, dust and how many days strangers are in the house. The exterior buyer wants to know about prep, scraping, what happens to the old caulking, and whether the weather window will hold. The cabinet buyer is not comparing you to another painter at all, they are comparing you to a full kitchen replacement, and the page has to make the comparison for them. The commercial buyer is a property manager who needs after-hours scheduling, insurance certificates and a per-unit number.

Splitting them lets each page read as though it was written for one person, because it was. It also gives you four pages competing in search instead of one, which is the part that pays.

The calendar decides when the site has to be live

This is the piece of advice painters most often ignore, usually at a cost of a full season.

Exterior work in Ontario runs roughly from the point the overnight temperatures stay above the minimum on the can through to early autumn. The enquiries for that work start arriving well before the first warm week, because homeowners book when they start thinking about it rather than when the weather turns. New pages take time to be crawled, indexed and trusted, and a review flow takes longer than that.

So the site that wins exterior season launches in winter. Interior work fills the cold months and the cabinet enquiries cluster in the run-up to the holidays, which means there is no quiet quarter, only a right order to build in. We plan the launch backwards from whichever season you most want to grow.

What the quote form should ask

Painting quote forms are usually either four fields or a questionnaire. Both lose work.

  • Job type, chosen from a list: interior, exterior, cabinets, commercial.
  • Scale in terms a homeowner knows. Number of rooms, or number of storeys, not square footage.
  • Scope add-ons as checkboxes: ceilings, trim, doors, closets.
  • Whether the home is occupied, which changes the schedule and the price.
  • Colours chosen or not, because the undecided ones need a different first call.
  • Photos, and a postal code.

Six questions somebody can answer honestly from their couch is worth more than twenty they abandon at number nine.

What we built for Windfeld Painting

Windfeld Painting works Brantford and Brant County across interior, exterior, cabinet refinishing and commercial. The brief was exactly the problem described above: make a homeowner feel they are hiring a company, not a guy with a ladder.

The first concept came back too playful and we dropped it, which is worth saying because the calm version is what the trade needed. Four job types became four properly separated buyer paths. Thirteen of the thirty-seven pages are built for the towns around Brantford that genuinely get searched, each one carrying their own jobs from that area rather than a stock library. A painter's gallery is the sale, so it is their work on it.

It is live, and you can scroll the whole thing on our work page.

Getting found town by town

Local search for painting is decided in two places. The map pack, which is your Google Business Profile, your categories, your service area and your review flow. And the organic results underneath it, where town-level pages win because almost nobody has built them properly.

Both of those are ordinary search work rather than anything clever. The reason it works in this trade is that the competition stopped at a home page and an "areas we serve" list.

Budget and timing

Our floor is $5,000 for a build. A painting site with four job paths and a set of town pages typically runs above it, and page count is the main thing that moves the number. Fixed quote up front, invoiced phase by phase, and launch lands 1.5 to 3.5 weeks after sign-off.

If you want to see what drives that figure up or down before you speak to anyone, what a website costs spells it out. If you are reading this in autumn, the timing is right and we should talk now rather than in April.
